RAIN: September Render Challenge

- by

We’ve decided to embark on a little project and let the community submit pictures around a common theme every month. I’m excited to tell you that submissions are now open for the September 2022 WP Guru Community Render Challenge (and yeah, we might want to work on that handful of a name).

This month’s theme: RAIN

It’s hot all over Europe, and who doesn’t enjoy a little cooling down. Give us your best shot at anything from a light drizzle over the countryside, to a thunderstorm over the sea, or a grey rainy evening in your favourite cyberpunk style coffee shop. Let your imagination run wild, and let us know a bit about your process.

Find out what you can submit and everything else you need to know on this page.

If you’d like to participate, drop a link to your image below in the comments and tell us which software you’ve used. I’ll compile a little gallery towards the end of the month so we can all enjoy a little “group exhibition”. I’m looking forward to what we can all come up with for September!

Meet The Winners

With so many great submissions, it was tough to pick

First Prize goes to Matt Castle

Rainfall by Matt Castle
#04 by Matt Castle

Our anonymous sponsor and I fully agree that this is outstanding work: excellent rain effects and character portrayal, she feels genuinely cold in this gloomy weather. Congrats Matt, you win $10 in cash courtesy of our anonymous sponsor, and you get to pick a video game from this list. Well done Sir!

Second Prize goes to Finn Wraae

#11 by Finn Wraae

I’ve picked this image because I love the mood and execution. It tells a story and evokes emotion – and I totally didn’t see the small area of poke through on his arm until the last minute. Fantastic job Finn, you get to pick yourself a video game from this list.

Thank you all so much for your wonderful submissions! I hope we’ll see you all again next time😍

  1. 2 images and 1 animation. Rain plays only a minor part in all 3, but it’s there.

The storm is over at the robot graveyard, all that remains of the downpour are raindrops on the window. Note the shrunken head left as an offering in this otherwise neglected city of the dead/obsolete.

Caution is advised at the Tiki Sale. Yes, a storm’s coming, but, with or without inclement weather, caution is ALWAYS advised at the Tiki Sale.

This fragmentary Skull Island travelogue takes place in in an alternate 1950s that never was, but could have been. Should have been. An aside: If you haven’t seen the movie Robot Monster, there’s a hole in your life.

For static images I usually start with real-world photos*, then bring in 3D stuff from Carrarra (the good ol’ days) or DAZ Studio, and finish with plenty of Photoshop. For the movie it was DAZ Studio, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Digital Zone stuff, all glommed together in After Effects.

F’rinstance, here’s the original image of the Tiki building:

  3. Hi, Deviant here this is my submission for this months Render challenge,

i decided to create a custom model with custom materials made specifically for the challenge. first thing is did was i used a real scanned model, then used wrap4d to wrap the scanned model to genesis 8.1, then converted the skin texture also using wrap4d, then i used shadermap 4 to make materials such as normal map, spectacular, glossiness etc, and Photoshop to make translucency maps, and then i converted the diffuse texture mat from color space srgb to acesg, then i used gen 8.1 uvs to make new custom eye materials using flipped normals eye kit
i added a custom sss shaders in iray with custom render settings for using the acesg color space.
i was not happy with any rain products and i was unable to get particle physics to work with colliding with genesis or other props, it worked ok with primitives. i then played around with Ps and rain brushes but in the end i decided to leave it like it was straight from iray, i have not done any post work to the image, i didn’t end up using the scan model just the skin material i used a custom morphed figure inside of daz3d instead, after pc crashes at 80% i stopped the render at 82%

here are my 3 entries all done with daz studio this is my first attempt using any wet assets.
this first image was done in daz studio. Rain effects were done in Photoshop and the assets that I used were
and the shaders for the skin and the drops came from this product.

this image was also rendered in daz 3D rain effects done in Photoshop. And the assets that I used in this render were
and for the wet skin shader I used this asset.

this last image was done in daz 3D rain effects were done in Photoshop using a slightly different method for this one. And the products used and this one were

and for the skin shader used.

  6. I have 2 2D Art submissions, done on Black Sketchbook paper and White Gelly Roll pens.

The Running Man is based on a Japanese 18 Century painting, I think.
My Art Style is a cross between Picasso and Dr Seuss, with a tinge of Grandma Moses. LOL

    I hope this link works.

  7. Here is my second submission for the Rain Render Challenge.
It was done like the 1st one I did …Running Man.

The Black Sketchbook paper is Canson XL 9×12″ 92lb., and Gelly Roll White ink pens by Sakura.

This submission is called Samurai Standing in the Rain. I got the idea from the many Samurai movies I’ve watched over the years. The Blind Swordsman, the Classic Seven Samurai, etc.

My Art Style is a cross between Picasso and Dr Seuss with a touch of Grandma Moses. 🙂

Thanks Camilla for coming up with the idea , and Jay for Hosting it.
