RAIN: September Render Challenge

- by

We’ve decided to embark on a little project and let the community submit pictures around a common theme every month. I’m excited to tell you that submissions are now open for the September 2022 WP Guru Community Render Challenge (and yeah, we might want to work on that handful of a name).

This month’s theme: RAIN

It’s hot all over Europe, and who doesn’t enjoy a little cooling down. Give us your best shot at anything from a light drizzle over the countryside, to a thunderstorm over the sea, or a grey rainy evening in your favourite cyberpunk style coffee shop. Let your imagination run wild, and let us know a bit about your process.

Find out what you can submit and everything else you need to know on this page.

If you’d like to participate, drop a link to your image below in the comments and tell us which software you’ve used. I’ll compile a little gallery towards the end of the month so we can all enjoy a little “group exhibition”. I’m looking forward to what we can all come up with for September!

Meet The Winners

With so many great submissions, it was tough to pick

First Prize goes to Matt Castle

Rainfall by Matt Castle
#04 by Matt Castle

Our anonymous sponsor and I fully agree that this is outstanding work: excellent rain effects and character portrayal, she feels genuinely cold in this gloomy weather. Congrats Matt, you win $10 in cash courtesy of our anonymous sponsor, and you get to pick a video game from this list. Well done Sir!

Second Prize goes to Finn Wraae

#11 by Finn Wraae

I’ve picked this image because I love the mood and execution. It tells a story and evokes emotion – and I totally didn’t see the small area of poke through on his arm until the last minute. Fantastic job Finn, you get to pick yourself a video game from this list.

Thank you all so much for your wonderful submissions! I hope we’ll see you all again next time😍

  1. A couple of older ones, but I may see if I can cook up something new as well:

Rainfall is the older one, (old enough that when I set it up, it was before Mesh Grabber was released, and as I was using a Genesis 2 figure (mostly for the look) with much newer clothing, this meant a lot of exporting meshes to Blender for fine-tuning.
It also took a painfully long time on the 1050 Ti I was using at the time.

Gallop was an experiment with geometry based rain, to see how it worked compared to card/billboard based rain. There’s 100,000 instanced refractive raindrops in the scene – which, counterintuitively, rendered faster than you’d normally find with rain cards. Although each actual intersection with a raindrop was more demanding, the fact that Iray was usually only hitting one or two drops per ray rather than having to process a dozen layers of cards on nearly every ray proved faster in the end.

Alas, the lack of motion blur in Iray limited how good the raindrops could look though, and they’re stretched out and crisp more than the vaguer blur that I’d prefer. But still, an interesting experiment.

  2. Hey 3Dshannanigans,

Here is my submission for this month.
Rain huh? Didn’t have one but, I did have a shower one and I hope this also counts for this month’s challenge.
As it is falling water 😉

    Anyway about this picture:
Did this one back in 2020 and made an SFW version yesterday out of it, especially for this occasion.
This was a commission done for a customer of mine called “Blondbeth”
A model specially made through my customer’s wishes.

I can remember very well how hard it was to have good lighting when I started out.
WP Guru was one of the few that helped me out through one of his earlier tuts about lighting and since then
have been wildly experimenting with different light setups that eventually give me the looks that I have been using
for about 2 / 3 years now which is very vividly satisfying and pleasing to the naked eye ;).
Even in darker scenes lighting and reflections can be very hard to do.
Especially where Iray doesn’t like darker scenes very much.

    Post work with Photoshop:
Adjustment curves layer for a bit more light/contrast
And a fill (pink color) layer (opacity at 7%) (Soft Light) to give it a little bit of a soft color tone.

My submission features my own custom character, Victoria, who was created with Reallusion’s Character Creator. Her Dress, hair, and the kitchen environment were all Daz assets that were brought into iClone where everything was arranged and rendered.

This was not too technically challenging, although I had to modify the window in Blender to remove the double-pane of glass. I probably spent 80% of the time trying to get the texturing on the window to look properly foggy and rainy. In the end, I purchased a texture set from Flipped Normals to help me out. (https://flippednormals.com/downloads/30-droplet-alphas-8-bpr-wet-glass-material-all-4k-tileable/)

The kitchen was part of this set: https://www.daz3d.com/european-style-apartment?cjref=1&utm_source=cj&utm_medium=affiliate&cjevent=514e87dea8f611eb817700b70a82b838

This is my second submission to the challenge and it is quite a bit different than the first one. We were told that the rain did not have to be water, so I somehow immediately thought of it raining blood. And who better to enjoy a blood storm than a cute vampire girl. So, I created Susan here for the challenge, and also as something to do to de-stress from a hectic week.

Susan was created in Reallusion’s Character Creator in about 1.5 hours and the scene was rendered in iClone. The background is the “Old London Town” from the Daz3D store: https://www.daz3d.com/old-london-town?cjref=1&utm_source=cj&utm_medium=affiliate&cjevent=514e87dea8f611eb817700b70a82b838

There is one purple and one green point light on either side of her face, a spot light on the back-left, and another white point light lighting up her face from the front. The balance of the scene is lit by an HDRI which also serves as the sky. I rendered out an Iray depth mask for the scene and used that in Paintshop Pro to fade the background into darkness. Some crappy blood rain was also comped in as well on a few other layers to complete the scene.
