How to play the Mass Effect 3 Demo on PS3 (2018)

The other day I downloaded the Mass Effect 3 Demo on my old Playstation 3. I had enjoyed Mass Effect 2 immensely, I own the trilogy for PC, and I wanted to take a look at how the Playstation 3 version looked.

To my surprise, the demo didn’t start up. All I got was an error message telling me that the EA Origin or Alliance servers are down, and then the demo quits. Which sucks.

Turns out those Mass Effect 3 demo servers have been switched off many years ago, and the game is obviously coded so badly that it thinks it can’t live without an answer from those servers. Seriously flawed design there, folks!

Lucky for us, there’s a simple trick we can use to start that demo anyway!

Turns out all we have to do is disable the PS3’s network connection. Without there being one, the game doesn’t check if the EA servers are operational and lets us start the single player mode just fine.

I’ve read that some users physically took their network cable out of their consoles, which seemed to do the trick. I’m more of a “sit in a chair and never get up” kind of guy, so I opted instead to disable it in the PS3 settings.

No matter if you’re using a wired or wireless connection, the procedure is the same. Head over to the far left and choose Settings – Network Settings. The second option from the top is Internet Connection. Set that to Disabled for the duration of ME3. When you’re done, set it back to Enabled and everything is as it always was.

That’s how you can play the Mass Effect 3 Demo on Playstation 3 in 2018 and beyond 🙂
